Porto
The definitive guide to discovering the Invicta City
Discover the best sights in Porto — monuments, museums, viewpoints, and unique experiences. The complete guide to exploring the city from Debrais Boutique Hotel, on Avenida da Boavista.
Porto cannot be explained
There are cities you visit and cities you feel. Porto is one of the latter. Granite streets rise and fall without warning. The scent of the river reaches you before the view. The Atlantic light hits differently here — more honest, more raw, more beautiful. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and repeatedly voted one of the best European cities, the Invicta is one of those destinations you never visit just once.
From Avenida da Boavista (where Debrais Boutique Hotel is located), the whole city is just minutes away. This is our guide to getting to know it well.
Historic Centre: Where it all begins
São Bento Station
One of the most beautiful railway stations in the world. The Neo-Manueline façade is imposing, but it is the interior that truly stuns: over 20,000 azulejo tiles cover the walls, telling chapters of Portuguese history through scenes of battles and everyday life. Entry is free. Even if you aren’t catching a train, it is well worth a visit.
Clérigos Tower
At 75 meters high, the Clérigos Tower is perhaps the most sought-after spot for the best panoramic view over the city. Climb the 225 steps and be rewarded with a unique perspective of Porto’s rooftops and the Douro River in the background. It was designed by Nicolau Nasoni, the most famous Baroque period architect in northern Portugal.
Livraria Lello
Considered one of the most iconic bookstores in the world, Livraria Lello opened in 1906 on Rua das Carmelitas, featuring Neo-Gothic architecture and a stunning red staircase. Book your ticket in advance — lines are long and the experience deserves to be enjoyed unhurriedly.
Church of Saint Francis
The city’s most important Gothic church, whose Baroque interior is completely covered in gilded woodcarving. A striking contrast between the austerity of the exterior and the exuberance inside.
Bolsa Palace
A magnificent 19th-century building whose highlights include the famous Arabian Room, the Hall of Nations, and a remarkable monumental staircase. A National Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bolhão Market
Following a major renovation, Bolhão now houses over 70 merchants offering fresh produce, local crafts, around 40 shops, and 10 restaurants. A living portrait of the city — bustling, colorful, and genuinely Portuense. Portuguese Citizenship
Culture and contemporary art
Serralves Foundation
10 minutes from Debrais. The complex includes a Contemporary Art Museum designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, an Art Deco villa, and an extensively preserved park. Internationally acclaimed temporary exhibitions, garden sculptures, and a wild woodland that invites outdoor exploration.
Casa da Música
A 7-minute walk from Debrais. Rem Koolhaas’s bold design and a diverse musical program make this venue a Porto icon. Classical music, jazz, world music — and a ground-floor café that is, in itself, reason enough to stop by. Visit Portugal
Off the beaten path
University of Porto Botanical Garden
5 minutes from Debrais. A surprisingly tranquil green sanctuary in the middle of the urban landscape. Greenhouses with tropical species, shaded paths, and benches for reading. One of the city’s best-kept secrets.
City Park
Portugal’s largest urban park stretches all the way to the ocean, featuring lakes, picnic areas, and trails. Ideal for a morning run, a late afternoon stroll, or simply taking a deep breath. Viagens e Caminhos
Foz do Douro
Where the river meets the Atlantic. The seafront promenade, Castelo do Queijo, and sweeping ocean views make Foz an essential stop for anyone staying in the city for more than two days.
